BUFFALO BILLIARDS GAITHERSBURG

Despite the business never living up to our hopes, the buildout remains one of my favorites.

If Ballston felt a little far from the city, Gaithersburg Maryland was the boondocks, 40 minutes away if there was no traffic. The site we leased was on the undeveloped ground floor of an old trackside granary in cute, historic Gaithersburg. Photos from Billiards Digest

It was a gorgeous spot in a shitty location. In hindsight, I would have done well to think more carefully about site location and should have created a report card for selecting future project locations. I’m a creator, a visual designer who values the bones of a building and is easily seduced by their potential. We repeated this mistake several times more.

Trains rumbled by 20 feet from our windows with the occasional sonic boom of the Metroliner hurting past and sending shockwaves against our giant windows. We fell in love with the site, and that feeling over-ruled some apparent downsides to opening a big bar in such a small town. While the site had a huge patio and plenty of room for 12 pool tables, it lacked the density the our first four locations enjoyed. Buffalo Billiards Gaithersburg never really took off and we sold it several years later, licked our wounds and returned to DC. Despite its shortcomings, the buildout remains one of my favorites.
