Once again, our talented design and build team went on the road to wrestle with a worn out space inn Old Town Philadelphia. Just below 2nd & Chestnut, Buffalo Billiards was going into a long, two story space that was slated to have apartments above. The challenges were constant with this build, but the end result was, and is still, gorgeous.
Geoff McNabola, Chris O’Connor and Stephen Pelszynski led the building team. Partner Mark Handwerger’s dad Joe, a DC architect and proud father, helped with the design. And Travis Smith went crazy with the decor. I remember Travis insisting that we have western themed fabric inserted into the backs of our diner booths—not an expensive move—but once again the right call. Travis created dozens of displays throughout the space and customers couldn’t believe what they found inside the doors.
We made a rookie mistake when we designed the bar. It wrapped around two columns, was multi-dimensional and created chaos for the bar staff when we were crowded. We should have run the bar in a straight line across the back wall. Lesson learned. Every bar-build taught us new tricks, and we wrapped them into a playbook that made our future bars that much better.
