GEORGETOWN BILLIARDS

GEORGETOWN BILLIARDS

Georgetown Billiards was a quirky pool hall tucked in on Prospect Street in DC. Georgetown U students loved it!

No photos survive in my archive. This was a challenging location at best. There was little signage and the footprint was tight for pool tables. We gave it a shot with partner Scott Wandling who later bought the business. Scott had managed Buffalo Billiards when we first opened in 1992 and worked hard to build a loyal customer base in Georgetown..

We bought this business thinking that the Georgetown location would make up for poor signage and a lackluster location on a side street. It’s hard to say why it couldn’t develop the same kind of following as Bedrock and Atomic Billiards, each small neighborhood bars like Georgetown Biliards. The seasonality of depending on a college crowd hurt, and the nearby residents were older and just didn’t support us.

It’s amazing to me that I have no photos of Georgetown Billiards and there seems too be almost no record of it online. How can a place just evaporate? It was there for close to ten years, including its run before we bought it. I found these pieces from The Washington Post, lending at least a bit of credit to many years of effort.

When last seen playing basketball in Saturday night in Philadelphia, Dennis Rodman had blond hair. Last night at Georgetown Billiards, it was still blond. That makes two days in a row! Jan 15, 1996 Now You Know, Washington Post
