SLICE & PIE/LUCY
SLICE & PIE/LUCY
My Tin Shop partners Peter Bayne and Todd Galaida decided to attend Pizza U at the Marra Forni pizza oven company near DC. There they learned enough about pizza to be dangerous, but more importantly they became friends with their teacher, world famous pizzaioli Giulio Adriani (pictured to the left). Soon enough, we were discussing where to open a slice shop in DC.
Luck is better than skill sometimes, and next door to Franklin Hall on Florida Ave. in DC, Pizzeria Vetri closed, a victim of corporate downsizing. We struck a deal with the landlord and went to work creating Slice & Pie and its in-house neighbor bar LUCY. The original idea was to have Slice & Pie offer carry-out and serve slices to LUCY’s customers through a window behind the bar. But LUCY became more than a pizza bar, as Giullio added to the menu and created a neighborhood-favorite restaurant. Meanwhile, Slice & Pi was pumping out the pies and slices next door.
In 2023 I sold my shares to my partners and have enjoyed watching their success. I felt that I wasn’t bringing enough to the table and they would benefit moving forward without me. And they have! Slice & Pie was voted 2nd best slice in the USA and in the Top 100 in the world in 2024. Expansion is under way in DC and I expect to see them continue to thrive.
